Regular grooming appointments are essential — but how you care for your dog’s coat in between visits makes a huge difference. At Hair of the Dog Highgate, we love seeing dogs come in with shiny, tangle-free fur, and it all starts at home! Here are our top tips to help keep your pup’s coat healthy, soft, and looking its best between grooms.
🪮 1. Brush Regularly (Even Short-Haired Breeds!)
Brushing helps remove loose hair, dirt, and dander while stimulating the skin’s natural oils. For long-haired or curly breeds, daily brushing is ideal. For short-haired pups, a few times a week will do the trick.
Bonus tip: Use a slicker brush or de-shedding tool suited to your dog’s coat type.
🐶 2. Keep an Eye Out for Knots or Mats
Spot a small tangle? Gently work it out with your fingers or a detangling spray before it turns into a tight mat. Mats can be painful and may lead to skin irritation — especially around the ears, belly, or legs.
🚿 3. Don’t Over-Bathe
It might be tempting to bathe your dog often, but too many baths can dry out their skin. Unless your vet advises otherwise, once every 4–6 weeks is usually enough — and your groomer will handle it with coat-specific shampoo when the time comes!
🥕 4. A Healthy Diet = A Healthy Coat
What your dog eats affects their skin and fur. A diet rich in omega-3s, good proteins, and proper hydration can lead to a shinier, softer coat. If you’re unsure, ask your vet for food recommendations.
🐾 5. Schedule Consistent Grooming Appointments
Even with the best at-home care, regular professional grooming is key. Our trained team at Hair of the Dog uses high-quality products and expert techniques to keep your pup’s coat in top condition — and we’ll let you know how to maintain it between visits.
❤️ Keep Them Happy, Inside and Out
A healthy coat isn’t just about appearance — it’s about comfort, hygiene, and overall well-being. By keeping up with simple coat care at home and staying on top of grooming appointments, your dog will look and feel their best year-round.
